Extended wingtips, dorsal fin
and stabilator extension STC approvals.
Performance Data for PA-28-140 through PA-28R-200 with Extended Wingtips & Dorsal Fin Mods:

STC SA1228CE approves the installation of aluminum
wing extensions, new-style wingtips, stabilator extensions and dorsal
fin on the following Piper Aircraft (Arrow and Lance models are listed
lower on this page):
PA-28-140, -150, -160 (all serial
numbers)
PA-28-180 (serial numbers 28-1 through
28-7205318)
The modification extends the wing span from 30' to 32'
2.5", installs a new Hoerner style wingtip, extends the stabilator span
from 10' to 12' 10.5" and installs the new style dorsal fin fairing to
replace the old "Nixon nose" fairing. All components must be on the
airplane (wing extensions, stabilator extensions and dorsal fin) to meet
the FAA approval require ments
for this STC.
The wing modification consists of removing the old
round style wingtips and installing either of these two options:
- Riveting on the Piper Aircraft metal wing
extensions, extending the navigation light wires and screwing on the
new style wingtips, or,
- Install the
Globe Fiberglass
extended wingtips
with Whelen Recognition
lights, extend the navigation light wires and run a new wire for the
recognition lights. This is generally the best option as parts are
readily available and the addition of the lights in each wingtip
improve taxi and landing lighting significantly over the single nose
cap light.
The stabilator modification includes adding Piper
Aircraft skins, ribs and spars. The stabilator parts MUST be purchased
from your Piper Dealer, Distributor or other Piper parts source. The
stabilator tip is re-installed after the aluminum structure is riveted
in place. A new stabilator balance tube may be required to properly
balance the stabilator after the modification.
The dorsal fin fairing is the same two-piece fairing
assembly approved by our other Piper STC's.

Dorsal Fin Fairing here.)
The labor time to install this
modification is approximately sixteen hours. This time does not include
paint.
This modification adds beauty and makes the airplane appear much
newer, more expensive and handle with improved flight characteristics.
Performance:
Before this modification the "fat wing"
or "Hershey Bar" wing Cherokee has a tremendous sink rate in a reduced
power situation. This installation results in a gentle sink rate by
adding wing area, thereby reducing wing loading. The modification
improves the climb rate and cruise speed. Stall speed is reduced.
Another improvement results by reducing wingtip vortices, which cause
disturbance of airflow over the aileron during slow speed flight. The
result is an improved aileron response with improved "roll control
power" making cross wind landings much easier.
Many pilots complain of "wing heaviness" on the short
wing Cherokee when fuel is burned from one tank for more than 45
minutes. With the extended wings fuel can be used from one tank for an
hour and fifteen minutes without any noticeable wing heaviness.
The long stabilator requires very little effort to
flare on landing. The additional length makes it easy to hold the nose
off the ground during a full stall landing, eliminating the problem of
porpoising. The added stabilator area requires less trim during cruise,
which results in less drag.
The added lift of the wing, new design wingtips,
reduced drag of the stabilator and the vertical fin fairing all combine
to give a faster cruise speed, increased control power, better
rate-of-climb, extremely docile stall characteristics, greatly reduced
sink rate and the appearance of a brand new airplane.
STC SA2490SW approves the installation of aluminum
wing extensions, new-style wingtips and the dorsal fin on the following
Piper airplanes:
PA-28R-180 (all serial numbers)
PA-28R-200 (serial numbers 28R-35001
through 28R-7135329)
The Piper Aircraft wingtip modification uses the same
parts as the fixed gear models above and extends the wing span from 30'
to 32' 2.5", by installing new Hoerner style wingtips and the new style
dorsal fin fairing to replace the old "Nixon nose" fairing. All
components must be on the airplane (wing extensions and dorsal fin) to
meet the FAA approval requirements for this STC.
PIPER LANCE (not available for
aircraft with fuel tanks in the wingtips)
PA-32R-300 S/N 7680001 and on;
PA-32300 S/N 32-7940001 and on;
PA-32RT-300 S/N 32R-7885001 and on;
PA-32RT-300T S/N 32R-7787001 and on.
The wingtip modification uses the same Globe
Fiberglass wingtips and reco lights as the fixed gear models above.
This approval installs new Hoerner style wingtips and the new style
dorsal fin fairing to replace the old "Nixon nose" fairing. All
components must be on the airplane (wing extensions and newer style
dorsal fin) to meet the FAA approval requirements for this STC. If you
need replacement wingtips on your Lance this will be far less expensive
than purchasing new Piper wingtips. Performance improvement to cruise
speed and climb are positive but very slight on the Lance models.
